Vertigo (BPPV) is a condition in which a person feels as if the room is spinning or rocking, creating what we tend to call dizziness. Patients with BPPV usually experience vertigo when they turn over in bed, get in or out of bed, look up to a high shelf or put their head back in the shower.

BPPV most frequently occurs when small, micro-sized calcium crystals called otoconia become dislodged from their normal location on the utricle, one of the inner ear sensory organs. These dislodged otoconia provide a false sense of movement, resulting in sensations of spinning, movement, and dizziness. It may also stem from issues with the brain, spinal cord, or inner ear. A head injury, high blood pressure, and certain medications may also cause vertigo.

Various things may cause BPPV, a problem that leaves many people feeling dazed, confused, and debilitated. Others characterize the condition as a rare occurrence that brings mild annoyance. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is the most common of vestibular disorders and the most easily treated. In most patients, it can be cured with a simple physical therapy maneuver.
